Faction/House Ship Lists

#1
Hi again... more questions :-)

As you may have read, we've been using Silent Death and our small collection of basic ships to link to our Gates of Antares tabletop game.
We grouped the ships we had as;

Gimgamgoo Wrote:Concord:
 Hellbender
 Thunderbird
 Salamander

Algoryn:
 Blizzard
 Pit Viper
 Teal Hawk

Isorian:
 Dart
 Talon
 Lance Electra

Ghar:
 Kosmos
 Spirit Rider
 Nighthawk

I also purchased 4 MPAC ships from the online store - chosen mainly because the basic points (in Hangar 51) were around 120-130, plus the styles seemed to fit the looks of the ships we'd chosen.
  • Conestoga (for the Algoryn)
  • Drakar (for the Ghar)
  • Star Raven (for the Isorian)
  • Predator (for the Concord)
Anyway, recently I've tried to fit these groupings into the 'real' Silent Death universe, using the list I have in a book I bought called "Rules of War II". This seemed to show all the Houses and the ships they could use.

I can match them as follows:
  • Algoryn = Espan
  • Ghar = House Colos
  • Isorian = Unkulunkulu
  • Concord = Kashmere (except for the Predator)
However, while doing this activity, I realised there were several ships in the store, that weren't in any of the lists. (eg the Predator).
Is there a more upto date list than the one in Rules of War II that I can get somewhere? I figure the Predator is actually for House Colos, as there is a comment at the bottom of the ship stats page in Hangar 51 saying "printed in House Colos".

To get them to match better, I might get myself a few more ships from the online store and get a Karttikeya (slightly higher in points than the other MPACs) or a Varuna (similar in points) for the Concord to replace the unofficial Predator.

Thanks for any comments, especially if there's a more complete list of House/Faction ship lists.

As you know, Hangar 51 has a House affiliation entry in the Index by Type starting on page 3. Virtually every House specific ship and refit employs technologies peculiar to the House they're affiliated with, and will also reflect the technological capabilities of the House in what ranges of armaments are employed in their ships. The rule of thumb is that if it's an Imperial Era ship (ie., one of the Core Ships or one of those in the Core Rule Book such as the Star Raven), you might possibly encounter a few scattered here and there in a given House, but such would be few and far between, and even depending upon the type, be employed for secondary roles such as a battered old previously space pirate-owned Star Raven in House Tokugawa's Combined Fleet Self Defense Force being flown by a frontier regiment as a squadron hack/getabout/go-fer transport with most of it's armament removed to make room for passengers and cargo. Or you might find a sextet of Darts being flown by Warworlders as advanced trainers/emergency defense fighters in a quiet sector when suddenly a gang of freelance mercs out to avenge an old grudge show up (and the Warworlder trainee pilots suddenly need to grow up real fast).

There are a few errors in the Hangar 51 index such as the Curtis Shuttle being listed as a Sunrunner exclusive when it is in fact a ubiquitous craft found all across Terran Space, and the fact that the list is not in precise alphabetical order or 100% comprehensive, but it is what is available currently. This is one more of our punch list chores, to create a comprehensive fleet list for all of The Twelve, plus expanding the list to include a number of Houses Minor of note such as the Karelian Republic, Loma Verde, and House Falstaff. Another is to add a text description for each ship shown in the online store that states it's particular House affiliation(s). Once I've completed the task of compiling and editing the list, we'll post it on the Website, and here on the Forum as well, just to be thorough. It will also be incorporated in the 3rd edition of the Core Rulebook when that sacred tome is finally ready for publication.

Obviously a good number of the ships found in the Silent Death universe are peculiar to specific Houses. The Predator for example is a very nasty customer, a specialized anti-shipping strike boat found in service only in House Colos (from where it originated). The Predator is a specialized killer designed to run in at high speed like a more nimble fighter, blast a freighter or three in a convoy to radioactive garbage with the Predator's three Ion Rams, and then (ideally) scoot away before taking too much damage from the convoy's escorts.

The Karttikeya in contrast is a high speed armed transport/blockade runner unique to the Kashmere Commonwealth. It's speed and armament make it a highly desirable ship especially for smugglers and pirates, so the mercantile/corporate aristocrats that rule the vast Kashmeri trade empire aren't too keen on seeing such sophisticated craft fall into the hands of those who would eagerly use such a vessel to prey upon Kashmeri shipping lanes. It's therefore virtually impossible to find a Karttikeya in the service of the Luches Utopian People's Revolutionary Space Navy any time soon unless one of the many pirates, smugglers, and assorted space rats that call Port Royale in the Luches system home manages to acquire one. Of course, this in turn would trigger an immediate hefty bounty offering from the Kashmeri government for whomever hunts down the stolen ship and destroys both it and the thieves responsible...

In the short lived campaign I had we used the House Ships for random generators. Once the House was selected the opponent drew x points of ships from that list. It worked quite well. We also used a basic skill randomiser too, so that not every encounter was going to bring the kneecapping best all the time.

On your point about not always bringing one's best flying thuggery, history overflows with examples of this very issue. One could easily find that one's squadron hasn't yet received the latest model or type of whatever fighter you're supposed to be flying, or having a mixed bag of types in various states of repair and functionality.

Another twist can be of course as you stated, pilot quality. Depending upon your squadron's loss rate in flight crews and the rate at which those losses are being replaced -and with what quality of recruits are the training centers turning out- you could easily find yourself with a really hot squadron leader, a handful of experienced pilots, and a steady stream of raw recruits being sent in in obsolescent types because that's the absolute best your sector command depots can provide.

The Luches for example have to conserve their very best types of combat craft, for the simple reason that their manufacturing capacity is so limited. So the best craft they have available area always reserved for the very best pilots and political officers, while the vast majority of the Luches fighter pilots are sent into action in Delta IIs or if they're really, really lucky, Cossacks. Otherwise the Hellbenders, Spirit Riders, and so forth are only going to show up in a typical Luches flight in small numbers, as the majority are held back by the Luches brass to equip the showcase Guards units used to troubleshoot particularly difficult sectors, guard the capos and The Boss (and their high value smuggling operations), or police the spacing lanes leading to and from Port Royale.

The campaign was based on Warhound salvage. The map was 'black or uncharted' space. Here it was most dangerous. As the players explored they could change the map into safer navigable areas eg 'Green' space or a securer space. Now and then random events would throw up random encounters.

The caveat was to not allow players to bring about their full force to trounce a minor force. This was based on TPV of the players vs the BPV of the opponent (keeping it simple). If this exceeded 1000tpv it had a chance of waking up the bugs. IIRC for each 500pts above 1000 would add 1 to the die roll. Roll a D10, on a 10 you have woken up the bugs (the bugs occupy the closest unexplored planet). From then on, the player who had the biggest battle would have the bugs flying towards them.

Nice! Very smart approach. I like!  Cool

OK! I just finished the virtual version of digging through a stuffed storage unit, and here is what I came up with as far as a comprehensive fleet composition list is concerned! The order in which they're all grouped is SPAC/TPAC/MPAC/Warhound, and yes, there are some tantalizing clues about future ships embedded in the list here and there!

Thanks for all the info in this thread (both of you) It's been fantastic!
I also love the idea of awaking the bugs - going to have to get myself some bug ships soon.

I've been in the process of putting together a document that looks a little like the House lists on pages 25-30 of Rules of Warfare II using the info you listed above.

Obviously there's some changes to the Rules of Warfare II that I'm unsure of.
For example, as I started typing, I notice that Thunder Bird was listed on the Rules of Warfare II section for the ASP, but not in the list above (I'm sure there's others, but that was the first I noticed) along with quite a few missing variants II, III etc.

There's also the Espan (Along with UNW, Sunrunners and Night Brood) missing in your list. (And some new ones added). Now I know I haven't read (or yet bought) all of the supplements yet, (it will take an age to get through them all), but have the Espan collapsed or been destroyed in the current SD universe? I was hoping to base one of my factions on them.

I see a lot of names of ships I don't see on the webstore - but I assume that links to older v1 ships and the post you made in the other thread.

Also, the Work in Progress file is;
https://gimgamgoo.files.wordpress.com/20...lists2.pdf

Some icons in the pdf are clearly place holders. :-)

Thanks for your efforts in trying to untangle the snarled ball of yarn we inherited. Yes indeed, there are holes aplenty to be plugged (and we aims ta plug 'em). If you want to help on your own initiative, we appreciate whatever fans of Silent Death and SD:TNM voluntarily do when it comes to punch list chores such as this.

Regarding the ships you see named in the fleet lists I posted but not in the web store, those are new ships I was planning back when ICE was running the show, with an eye to fill out the fleets of the various factions as necessary. Such nefariousness is not abandoned and forgotten here, but merely put on hold as we keep taking baby steps forward with our threadbare budget.

Of course, we are not the least bit shy of launching a Kickstarter in the foreseeable future, starting with those hefty 3 to 1 scale models...

Edit: re: the placeholders, LOL!!

Well my group is starting a campaign in Sept. and we are using the Fleet Rules from Rules of Warfare II as a starting point to build your fleets. One question I have is I love the bat and Black widow, how under the Merc. or allied House's I have Hibernia and Kashmiri (I'm playing Signard) Do I get these two ships into my fleet?
