And so it begins! From Callsign: McKenzie Himself, this just in:

On the 14th of January 2017 at 2pm, we'll be holding our first Silent Death event at the Genghiscon gaming convention in Perth, Western Australia:

https://www.facebook.com/events/1686923414952733/

The event is mostly focused at introducing new players to the game, with each player piloting a pair of SPACs. Prizes are currently being organised as we speak.

If all goes well and I can get some gaming and testing in, I'm thinking I may run a game session during a local convention (Hotlead, in southern Ontario) using my SW:The Force Awakens collection.  I may have time (4 hours) to run two scenarios even.

Any suggestions for good intro scenarios for convention players?

In terms of forces, as a foundation I have five First Order TIES, plus one TIE Superiority Fighter (the two-seater Finn and Poe steal) vs. four T-70 X-Wings (including Poe's Black One).  For colour, I have a basic First Order shuttle, Ren's shuttle, and a stormtrooper shuttle.  I also have an Imperial cargo ship (the four-winged thing in the Rogue One trailers - bought it not realizing it was from R1 and not TFA!).  The shuttle and cargo ship could be used by either side, depending on the mission.

I'm planning on giving each player a random pair of SPACs with easy to follow basic rules so that the game keeps flowing. Or you can use the Astro Smash rules.

Chris,

with the force mix you have you the making of Operation Vengeance in space, in this case of a Rebel attempt to intercept and whack an Imperial VIP or critical cargo. The TIE fighters fly escort, two shuttles one carrying the VIP (target) and one carrying the staff (expendable decoy) or even all three shuttles (second expendable decoy). The first turn the Rebels start with the initiative automatically, as they have the element of surprise.

You can reference Space Junk if you have it for the Admiral Mitsushimi scenario. That variant includes wormholes of varying stability, just to make things even more interesting... Cool

Operation Vengeance BTW was the intercept mission that brought down Japan's Admiral Yamamoto Isoroku: Death by P-38

Back in the 1990s I had the honor and great privilege of speaking one-on-one with one of the participants in Operation Vengeance, Besby Frank Holmes, a P-38 fighter ace credited with downing one of the two G4M "Betty" bombers:  Besby Frank Holmes

Thanks guys.  I'll look at the Vengeance scenario, I just came across the Admiral Mitsushimi scenario the other day, though the wormholes might be a bit too crazy for first-timers.  I think  Ren in his shuttle would be a suitable target.
I forgot to mention I have the Millenium Falcon too, so that would let me have three Resistance players and three First Order ones.

A six-player slugfest is always a good place to start... Cool

Report:

One the day we had ten participants and several onlookers. Over the course of five hours we ran two matches.

Match one - House Colos (2 x Talon II + 2 x Dart III) vs House Devon (2 x Talon III + 2 x Dart IV): House Colos drew first blood utterly annihilating one of the enemy Darts... before everything went pear shaped as the Talon IIIs systematically obliterated every single Colosian ship on the board. Much groaning was had.

Match two - House Colos (2 x Spirit Rider III + 2 x Thunderbird II + 2 x Hell Bender) vs House Devon (2 x Spirit Rider + 2 x Thunderbird + 2 x Hell Bender II): once again House Colos drew first blood, destroying two Devon fighters right off the bat in the first two rounds. Then they ran out of missiles... and the surving Thunderbirds and Hell Benders hunted down every single Colosian ship in the next five rounds.

It is generally agreed that girls have unholy luck and should be banned from playing the game (j/k).

Titles:
Most Kills: Zing (4 kills first match, 3 kills the second)
Best Sportsmanship: Gazza (able to make light of his own ships asploding)
It Sounded Like a Good Idea at the Time: Josh (let's launch all our torps at a damaged Spirit Rider that already have a full salvo of ten missiles locked onto it...)

(Have more pics but max 5 per post)

Here are more pics of the tournament Smile

First off, that sign up poster ROCKS! Jake has got some skills, no question about it. Cool

I am very happy to see that the event drew ten participants plus the rubberneckers; good response to your event, I expect to a good degree due to the clean and organized appearance of your event. Excellent.

Now, about those pilots of note... Callsign: Zing made ace in two missions. An impressive tally by anyone's standards. Sounds like a potential flight leader in the making.  Cool

Callsign: Gazza clearly knows how to die with their flight boots on (and was channeling my own usual luck - ack!).  Tongue

Callsign: Josh's exploit is recategorized to Most Gratuitous Application of Overkill in a Single Game. Clearly Josh is a Colosian pilot at heart, and should be commended accordingly.  Big Grin

The photos are most welcome, just what we like to see here on the ole' Forum! Thanks for posting, and keep 'em comin'!  Smile
