MPACS - Gunboats - Smurf - 06-06-2019

It's nice to have a big friend but not all of them are that great.

Eppring Prime
It's cheap, It's easy to hit, it's a wonder why you put it on the field.  Apart from the various MLs there is no real reason to take this ship apart from desperation.

Eppring
Well it's an improvement on the Prime.

Eppring Alpha
This I think is the better version.  The weapon layout packs more punch at least.

Spider
If there was ever an interwar years for gunboats then the Spider represents this.    It is not great in speed, defence nor firepower.

Conestoga
It looks impressive but 4 of the weapons are questionable: Railrepeater (x2), Portobolt Projector and a Minigun.

Star Raven
I like it.  Not great but it has a good weapon layout, decent torps, and an ML.  The Alpha version is even better.

Drakar
A nice look but it does have that early critical hit.

Betafortress
Despite the Alpha and Beta Versions the original is best for its hyperdrive.  The extra weapon and crew just add more costs.  With a compliment of various forms of firepower, it come with 2 MLs and 15Torps!

Ah yes, when Zeppelins, Biplanes, and Tractor Beams were still state-of-the-art... Big Grin

Just kidding. With the extreme speed restrictions, ammo restriction, and restricted D6 base dice, mass drivers go from limited but having a role, to nigh futile against anything with a DV of 13 or better pretty quickly. My recent games with DV 7 gammas have warped my opinion of their usefulness. Not sure how revisiting the DV/DR math will pan out unless those new brood gammas are a glimpse that DV is getting deflated across the board. Time will tell. Until then, setting them to 2d8 base dice mitigates their poor chance to hit anything other than barn sides enough to restore them. Blasphemy? Thoughts?

The range perk of these guns, to use the railrepeater as an example, can only be realized by easing target speed restrictions optional rule*, but by then, after the long range and speed penalties, you'll have about a 1:6 chance of hitting a Cetshwayo (DV 12, -1 range, -1 speed over restriction= 14 target value). Some stationary & Borax Freighter type targets being slightly easier, and yes, it's a heavy mount intended for the fattest bottomed girls in the enemy fleet, but still...
[Basing this on a D6 ADB from a "Regular" crew skill of 5-6 (rookie being 1-4, veterans 7-8, and aces 9-10, but that's my way of looking at skills: the baseline/majority of flight crews ADB being a d6).]

(* at which point it ceases to be "optional" if it's needed to fix a class of weapons)

It's those Operation Dry Dock range 20 Pulse Laser refits! But seriously, how did those old typos get copy-pasted into Hangar 51?  Dodgy

RE: MPACS - Gunboats - Smurf - 06-10-2019

The Betafortress Alpha was given a R Disruptorgun and the Beta was given a Twin Splattergun.

The Drakar Alpha swaps the Railrepeator for a Protobolt Projector.   It expands the torp capacity to 4 and doubles the magazines in the MLs.

Epping Prime had a DV of 8, one up from a Garbage Scow, with an increase in price by about 50% the Epping gained those massive MLs, more armour, 4 MK30 torps and those quad pulse lasers.

The Star Raven Alpha replaced those horrid 2MK50s for 2MK30s and 2 Twin Meld Lasers were swapped out for Disintegrators, plus a boost to its PD.

Orca
One of best platforms due its mix of high DV front amour and speed.  It comes with 2 360 Sext Pulse lasers, a 360 Quad Splattergun and a 360 ML.  You don't need an expert crew to make this package threatening.  The range limitation is 10, its threat range is therefore limited.

Orca Alpha is not so good but may spook heavy armoured low DV boats.

Nemesis
This Gunboat comes with a price tag. You are getting a Drive 12, DV15 without armour. It had double the torp load of a Betafortress, 2 360 Sext Splatterguns, 2 Quad Splatterguns, and an Ion Ram. The best PD and DC. What can go wrong... apart from being threatened by a squadron of Thunderbirds and a Epping?

Lilith (QVP)
Who ever thought of laying this down, after looking at the blue prints, must have been on something. Its price bracket is in the realm of a Corvette! It can out pace the Nemesis with Drive 14, DV15 but had average PD and DC. Armed with a Turbo Laser and the Sayf ad-Din is it supposed to hunt down Warhound Class ships then the 30mk50s make sense, but they could be scaled back to either mk40s or mk30s. The 5 batteries of Quint Pulse Lasers allows for a cheap crew.

Similar to the Nemesis, it will be a torp and missile magnet.
