Hello Folks, I was thinking of diving into Silent Death so I picked up a copy of the Rookie Rules as a taster.
Despite the vendor telling me it was complete, it looks like I am short some item pieces - perhaps someone could please tell if I am missing much? The contents of what I have is:
1 x Rookie Rules
1 x Tables and Display Book
1 x Introductory Scenario booklet
2 x Map Sheets
80 x Grey counters (Torpedoes?)
180 x Counters (5 lots of different colours, each counter in each lot numbered from 1 to 36)
20 x Asteroid counters
9 x Round yellow counters (turn trackers?)
23 * x Ships ( 2 of each kind) *Well I know I'm missing one of these...
24 x Stands (6 broken!)
The die are missing which the vendor promised to replace but I'd like to check if I'm missing anything before I claim. Thanks!

which mat to buy |

I've played for a long time with a friend who had a large Silent Death kit. That friend has moved away and I'd like to piece together my own kit for Astro Smash. I'm in the market for a mat. We used to play on a Geo-Hex mat, but it looks like they're not around anymore. Monday Knight Productions has a mat that looks identical. I'm also looking at the GamerMatz mat.
My question is, What is the correct hex size to order. Monday Knight Productions only has 1.5in hexes, and GamerMatz has 1in, 1.25in, 1.5in etc. hexes. What is the official size that the mat is supposed to have for Silent Death? I was about to order the MKP mat, but it seemed like 1.5in might have been too big.

Faction/House Ship Lists |

Hi again... more questions :-)
As you may have read, we've been using Silent Death and our small collection of basic ships to link to our Gates of Antares tabletop game.
We grouped the ships we had as;
Gimgamgoo Wrote:Concord:
Hellbender
Thunderbird
Salamander
Algoryn:
Blizzard
Pit Viper
Teal Hawk
Isorian:
Dart
Talon
Lance Electra
Ghar:
Kosmos
Spirit Rider
Nighthawk
I also purchased 4 MPAC ships from the online store - chosen mainly because the basic points (in Hangar 51) were around 120-130, plus the styles seemed to fit the looks of the ships we'd chosen.
- Conestoga (for the Algoryn)
- Drakar (for the Ghar)
- Star Raven (for the Isorian)
- Predator (for the Concord)
Anyway, recently I've tried to fit these groupings into the 'real' Silent Death universe, using the list I have in a book I bought called "Rules of War II". This seemed to show all the Houses and the ships they could use.
I can match them as follows:- Algoryn = Espan
- Ghar = House Colos
- Isorian = Unkulunkulu
- Concord = Kashmere (except for the Predator)
However, while doing this activity, I realised there were several ships in the store, that weren't in any of the lists. (eg the Predator).
Is there a more upto date list than the one in Rules of War II that I can get somewhere? I figure the Predator is actually for House Colos, as there is a comment at the bottom of the ship stats page in Hangar 51 saying "printed in House Colos".
To get them to match better, I might get myself a few more ships from the online store and get a Karttikeya (slightly higher in points than the other MPACs) or a Varuna (similar in points) for the Concord to replace the unofficial Predator.
Thanks for any comments, especially if there's a more complete list of House/Faction ship lists.

Kanone Class Corvettes
The original concept of the Kanone Class was a fast strike weapon for blockade running. The original was the K for Keel Cannon, it can make other larger Warhounds wince as it pounds away. Unlike many other Warhounds the Kanone Class can perform very quick 'U' turns.
More rounded versions were tested resulting in four additional variants. Ion Cannon is a good all round variant. For escort duty the Laz Tubes can punch out far and keep close to their transports. Surprisingly the Quad Blast Cannon can pack quite a terrifying punch. The peculiar concept was mounting the Quad Gatling Cannons, with excellent tracking although relative short range it makes excellent work at destroying the bugs.

Core RB ships |

Oh great and merciful leader, Karelian Suomi.
Are there plans in place to update the Core RB ships?
Let's face it, some of them are downright bad, while others are merely incorrectly costed.
To truly revive the game, it would be prudent to start with the core product.
I know there have been hints and dribbles of innuendo about this in the past.

New player's first questions... |

Hi,
I've not yet played my first game, but read through the rules quite a few times. I know if I play a new game with my wife or lad and it goes smoothly with little time wasted with my nose in the book during the game, it's a keeper. If I spend half the first game time reading up on rules, it seems complex to them and it ends up on the dusty shelf of games to never play again.
So, with that, I actually have very few questions. I've made my own turn summary sheet adding in the optional rules we want to try from the start. Feeling pretty confident, except for...
Warhead Launch Phase:
1. In the Warhead phase, in reality, how do you launch everything simultaneously? Do you just go through ship by ship launching or take it in turns like the movement phase?
Missile Launching:
2. a) If I launch missiles (with a lock on), can the same crew member that launched the missiles also launch a torpedo?
2. b) If a ship has a pilot and a gunner, can they launch a torpedo each (providing there's enough left)?
2. c) The "Revenge" class of ship has 1 gunner, but 3 missile launchers listed as Gunner. Can the gunner fire all 3 in one round, or is it designed like this so the Revenge class has 3 shots of missiles, but can only fire 5 rather than 10 at a time?
Point Defense:
3. a) The Point Defense system says it can be used to stop any torpedo entering the hex (instead of dodging). I assume you can only shoot as many times as the number in the brackets. eg a PD 1-7(2) only gets to shoot at two torpedoes.
3. b) If a PD of 1-7(2) only fires one shot at a torpedo, can it be used again once against a missile hit in the later phase, or does it still choose one or the other?
Thanks for any answers. I'm sure our first game will bring up a few more problems, but a good reading of the rules only had me questioning those parts.
PS: Loved my pdf purchase of Space Junk. So many cool ideas and scenarios we want to try already. :-)
PPS: I also bought Hangar 51, so I had the ship stats/cards for all the models. The one model that stood out on the store was the "Eel". I can't find this one. Which book is it in?

New Player - Linking SD to my other tt games |

Hi,
I've been playing wargames since the early 80s, so yeah... I'm old.
Most of the games have been Sci-fi or fantasy, but since my lad was 10, he took an interest in playing X-Wing with me. I started thinking of adding a space game to my current favourite tabletop game, Beyond the Gates of Antares.
I managed to pick up the SD:TNM box set from ebay. Although the box was a tad battered, the contents were complete and in great condition - all the ships and tokens still on sprues etc. I also picked up a couple of extra sprues of ships so have 6 of each of the basic ship.
Because of aesthetics, I've grouped the 12 ships into 4 sets of 3 ships to match the 4 factions my wife, lad and I play in Gates of Antares.
Concord:
Thunderbird
Salamander
Hellbender
Algoryn:
Teal Hawk
Blizzard
Pit Viper
Isorian:
Talon
Lance Electra
Dart
Ghar:
Spirit Rider
Nighthawk
Kosmos
Now, as I've not played SD yet, I was wondering if we played something like a 200-250 point game, limiting players to multiples of the ships above using points, would that be balanced enough?
I'll have a couple of spare sprues so could add others to mix it up a little, but I wanted to paint the main groups of ships so they matched the faction colours of my foot soldiers/vehicles.
If there's any glaring errors or OP ships in those lists that would cause imbalance, could you let me know.
The idea is that we can have campaigns where there's a ship battle prior to a battle on the planet, with the ship combat winner maybe getting bonuses. Or having ship games where the idea is to get relief to a plant through a blockade.
Thanks.
